Just came back from group discussion half an hour ago.
Can't believe our discussion lasted for 6 hours.
Inefficient much? Heh.
Anyway, I'm like having my dinner now (which is past midnight) and furiously typing away as I do not want my thoughts to slip away.
I was also drafting how I want this post to be like while bathing just now.
Y'know, I always do a lot of thinking while I'm
- bathing 'cause my thoughts just flow naturally when the shower rains over my head and
- before I sleep.
Is this normal? I guess so.
Or perhaps some people have it other ways.
So I wanna talk about a sight, something I have discovered.
While at my group mate's house, I realised something that may have been prevalent in other Singaporean families as well.
Scenario: A woman enters the house. I greeted her, thinking it was my group mate's mother. Under normal circumstances, my group mate would have greeted her "Mum" or something to acknowledge her mother but there was no such thing; no such acknowledgement at all. I then thought, hmm, perhaps this woman is my group mate's housekeeper. Y'know, homes in Singapore usually have 钟点女佣, otherwise known as domestic helpers whose pay goes by the hour? How I derived this assumption was because once this woman entered the house, she went straight to do housework. So I thought, hmm okay, domestic helper she was. And then subsequently, a guy entered the house. This time, I was very certain he was the Dad because of well, for obvious reasons la. There cannot possibly be a male domestic helper out there, am I right? However then again, my group mate did not acknowledge him, not even a "hey Dad!". Just then, the woman came out in her pyjamas after an apparent shower and light dawned on me- these two persons are obviously the parents of my group mates. What puzzles me is the lack of interaction amongst themselves.
To me, I'm very envious of how physically comfortable children can be towards their parents.
I, for one, cannot stand hugging my dad or kissing my mum.
This is not the culture that runs in my family.
But I can kiss Tingting very comfortably. Haha. Her face is so soft and supple and not forgetting, very kissable!
I saw how Mindy hugged her dad tightly before she departed for the States.
That moved me because I know I will never be able to do that.
My dad will repel me like a magnet and I will be sick with fear. Haha!
There's one other thing- gender divide.
Usually, girls will be closer to their mothers and guys, to their dads.
It's true for me- I'm more affectionate towards my mum as compared to my dad but I love them both equally ya.
My dad is not the open, as in outspoken sort so he would not voice out his concerns for us.
He's more of like the silent joker y'know.
Each time he tries to be funny by cracking lame jokes, we as children will try to accommodate him by laughing forcibly. HAHAHA!
As for my mum, well, she is not shy to display her emotions in front of us.
When she is upset, she shows it all.
For instance, she is crazy about the current drama "Love" which is showing on Channel 8.
Her bedtime is 10pm sharp so every night before she sleeps, I will walk into her bedroom and greet her and Tingting good night.
Last weekend, "Love" finished airing at 10pm (or earlier, I couldn't quite remember) and I did the same routine.
I actually did not notice she was tearing until she pointed it out herself you know.
I was too busy kissing Tingting HAHAHA.
She was like sniffing and explaining herself, "Aiya, this show too touching already. Bao-di (some young boy in the show) is so pitiful and fillial!" and I exclaimed, "Mum! Are you actually crying?!!".
I then broke out into laughter and broadcasted it to the whole family by shouting, "HAHA MUMMY IS CRYING BECAUSE OF THE SHOW!!!!" and everyone dashed to the master bedroom.
It was hilarious.
As opposed to my group mate's family, I find myself in a much pleasanter situation.
I believe cultures differ with each varying family and I'm perfectly contented with mine.
I mean, look at me, I have turned out this way not because I am supposed to be this way y'know.
My parents cannot evict themselves for who and what I am right now due to... inherent genes and the way they brought me up!
I have always had a spontaneous environment to grow up in, so to speak.
And my parents aren't any less crazier than I am because they are "lunatics" to begin with. LOL.
Hmm, I guess 家家有本难念的经。
There are different environments for every house and every child is brought up differently so I can't say which is the correct method, just different cultures in each family.
There are always two sides to a coin, just like how I have to deal with exaggeration in my family everyday yet enjoy familial bliss.
